Tesco entered Slovakia in 1996 through the acquisition of K-Mart Department Stores, which we still operate under the MY brand name. Today we operate more than 130 multi format stores, including our unique department stores. About 2.2. million customers visits us every week.
We are the 2nd largest private employer in Slovakia, employing almost 10, 000 people directly. One third of our jobs are in regions with high unemployment. On average we create more than 500 new jobs every year and we support thousands of jobs in the supply chain and service sector.
We have a strong record of supporting Slovakian enterprise and source a significant number of products locally, including developing a unique range of traditional Slovak foods in store. In September 2011, we launched Supplier Academy to support and educate our suppliers and develop new partnerships.
Slovakia is also home to our Tesco International Clothing Business which buys non-food stock from around the world and sells it on to our Central and Eastern European businesses. Two distribution centres (one for hardline and the other for softline) serve this region.
Every year we organize Tesco ‘Run For Life\\' events to help people to live healthier life styles and generate money for the local community. In winter 2011, we organised a ‘Skate for Life\\' event for the first time, which proved very popular. We have also taken practical steps to reduce our carbon emissions by 50% by 2020. In 2009 we opened the first low energy store in Slovakia in Rajec.
